El nombre de este son, derivado de Xipe, deidad prehispánica, revela una influencia mexicanista que resienten los grupos de la Ciudad de México y que ha provocado que los nombres antiguos de los sones, frecuentemente de animales, se cambien por otros más elaborados y de contenido histórico.
